ルイス・キャロルの原作小説をアニメーションに仕立てた作品。
だるい夏の午後、お姉さんが読んでくれる歴史の物語を聞きながらうとうとしていた少女のアリスは白いウサギが走っていく姿を見てすぐにその後を追う。ウサギについて穴の中へと入ってみるとそこは非常にふしぎな国だった。小さな扉の取っ手は口を利くし、テーブルの上にあった薬を飲んだらアリスは瓶の中に入れるくらいに小さくなって、自分が流した涙の波に乗って鍵穴を通っていく。アリスのついたところでは船乗りのドードーをはじめとした一群が波の打つ海辺を走りながらぬれた体を乾かそうと歌を歌っている。水の中でいくらくるくる回ったって体は乾かないとどんなに話しても彼らは全く話を聞かない。

イングランド生まれの劇作家シェイクスピアは、四大悲劇「ハムレット」、「マクベス」、「オセロ」、「リア王」をはじめ、「ロミオとジュリエット」、「ヴェニスの商人」、「夏の夜の夢」、「ジュリアス・シーザー」など多くの傑作を残しました。2002年BBCが行った「100名の最も偉大な英国人」投票でも第5位にランクインされています。賢者の名言集にピクアップした人物の中では「富も名声」も手にした珍しい人物です。52歳の若さで亡くなりましたが、その死因は腐りきったニシンから伝染した感染症であると言われ、4月23日の誕生日と同じ日に亡くなりました。死後は、高額納税者であったためホーリー・トリニティ教会の内陣に埋葬されるという栄誉を授けられました。
